I moved closer to Zyaire. There was something about their presence that rattled me. Bendali and this new guy, Trejid, just seemed off. Zyaire’s hand ran down the small of my back, and I arched into his touch. Trejid didn’t look like Bendali. He was a green towering, brooding alien that observed more than he talked.

They are probably planning to hand us over as soon as we get to their base.

Trejid sat forward. His beady eyes scanning my face. “Do you remember what happened to cause those men to die back there? Were they killed by your people?”

I’m glad they think we are not alone.

Licking my lips, I put a hand to my temple. “Everything happened so fast, and I was hit over the head, before our team could reach me.”

Zyaire moved his hand from my back to cup my face. “I won’t allow you to be hurt again.”

Zyaire thinks quick on his feet.

“Bendali hadn’t said anything about a team. How many are here?” asked Trejid.

“Don’t know or care. Did you think a male and female would come to Xengiea alone? That would be a suicide mission,” said Bendali.

Concentrating on Bendali’s words, I closed my eyes, allowing his emotions within his words to slide over me. My ears twitched, as I saw what he was thinking. Gogi sticks, his cock wet between a female’s thighs, and Bainkre’s death. Opening my eyes, I flopped down on the fur. I couldn’t afford to be weak right now. Despite Zyaire convincing them that our team had killed those men, we were alone. Zyaire was being both stubborn and reckless at the same time.

“Why don’t you rest?” said Zyaire.

Curling up, I rolled so that my back was facing the men. I kept my backpack hidden underneath the fur. My laser gun was tucked in my bio armor, but I felt that was too far. Sliding my hand under the fur, I grabbed the small blade. Sleep eluded me, until I felt Zyaire’s warm body pressed against mine.

My eyes opened widely, and I wiped the slobber off my chin.

Snap. It sounded like different tree branches breaking softly.

Is it an animal?

Several hours must have passed, yet I wasn’t certain what drug me from my comatose-like sleep. I was fully awake. Looking around, I saw nothing, but I heard Bendali’s snoring. A warm, cozy, soothing feeling touched my mind, and I instantly relaxed. Zyaire’s mental invasion was intimate and comforting.

Stay here and don’t move.

I felt Zyaire loosen his arms from around me.

Wait. It’s an animal and I can’t see it. I don’t think you should leave me here alone in the dark.

Grabbing his hand, I squeezed his fingers. I was on the verge of a full-on panic attack. I had never had one before, but it seemed like now was a good time.

It’s not an animal. Trejid has left. I need to see what he’s doing. I don’t trust him, and you shouldn’t either. If you hear something, shoot and figure it out later.

I can’t see. What if I accidentally shoot you?

If you hear me, I deserve to be shot.
